Reader Question: Is It More Efficient To Use Blown-In Insulation Instead Of Regular Insulation?

In an uninsulated home, is it efficient to use blown-in insulation instead of using regular insulation?
The short answer: yes, blown-in insulation is extremely effective and efficient at keeping your home comfortable.
As its name implies, blown-in insulation is, well, blown into the attic in small chunks using a large hose. The advantages of using blown-in insulation are numerous. They include:
- Fits into any space—One of the great things about blown-in insulation is that it can easily mold and fit into even the tightest spaces in your attic. When blown into the attic, it automatically fills in all the cracks and gaps for optimal efficiency. It’s also quick and easy to install. Traditional batt-and-roll insulation, on the other hand, has to be cut manually to fit into various spaces, making installation time-consuming.
- Highly resistant to temperature change—Insulation works by trapping air flow inside of itself. Blown-in insulation naturally has millions of tiny air pockets that add to its resistance to temperature change and heat flow across the insulation. This makes it highly effective at keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and that means savings on your energy bill. While roll-out insulation can be effective, we recommend installing two layers, top layer perpendicular to the bottom, to trap as much air flow as possible.
- Doesn’t promote mold or mildew growth—Because blown-in insulation does such a good job at filling in all the cracks, it helps keep moisture out. Not only does this make the insulation more effective, but it also goes a long way to preventing dangerous, costly mold and mildew growth.
- Virtually no settling over time—Blown-in insulation doesn’t really settle over time. In fact, it has the least amount of settling over time of all insulation products. That means that it keeps its energy saving R-value over time, ensuring it continues to perform the way it’s supposed to.
- Made of recycled materials—Not only is blown-in insulation energy efficient to help make your home greener, but it’s also made in a greener manner than some other types of insulation. Blown-in insulation is actually made of small clumps of recycled goods, including cellulose and fiberglass.
